Northwest Fan Fest Under New Management
The West Coast Science Fiction Association accepts stewardship of Northwest Fan Fest
Vancouver, BC—January 26, 2017
The West Coast Science Fiction Association (WCSFA) and The West Coast Fan Society (WCFS) announced today that WCSFA recently accepted stewardship of Northwest Fan Fest (NWFF), the Vancouver metropolitan area fan convention previously supported by WCFS.
The first NWFF was held in June 2014, a fusion of several previous conventions each focused on a different area of popular fan culture such as anime and manga, cosplay, and games and the WCFS was created in response to the success of this event. Under the society’s stewardship, NWFF evolved into a three-day event packed with celebrities, exhibitors, and programming on a wide variety of topics and interests, becoming very popular among the media, cosplay and gaming enthusiasts in the Vancouver metropolitan area, particularly the young adult demographic.
Following the most recent general meeting of the WCFS, the current board of directors, facing limited resources to continue the society’s mandate and a potential permanent cancellation of NWFF, asked the WCSFA to accept stewardship of the event, its intellectual property, and assets.
Cameron Locke, the current President of the West Coast Fan Society, said, “We chose to make our offer to WCSFA because they are a similar non-profit society which also coordinates and promotes community events for fans of science fiction and fantasy in the Vancouver metro region. As a stable organization with a long history of success we believed they would have no difficulty also supporting Northwest Fan Fest.”
The West Coast Science Fiction Association was honoured to accepted stewardship.
“Our organization quickly recognized what a shame it would be for Northwest Fan Fest to disappear from the local convention scene just because the society created to sustain it was unable to continue,” explained Chris Sturges, the current President of the West Coast Science Fiction Association. “Additionally, we have been expanding the number and type of events we support over the last few years and Northwest Fan Fest is so different in focus and tone from all our other events that this was a perfect opportunity for us.”
The West Coast Fan Society (WCFS) is a BC registered non-profit created to provide year-round organizational support to the Northwest Fan Fest (NWFF) fan convention and to provide its members with support in the form of funding and volunteer resources for other initiatives to benefit the Vancouver metropolitan fandom community. NWFF is a summer popular culture fan convention held in the Metro Vancouver area.
